the kratz center for creative writing at goucher college

The Kratz Center builds upon Goucher's long-standing reputation of producing talented and distinguished writers. Most recently, this list includes the following 1999 Goucher graduates: Jennifer Crowell, author of Necessary Madness, Christine Stewart, who received the 1998 Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowship for her collection of poems, and John McManus, who has received a publishing contract from Picador for his collection of short stories to be published in fall 2000.

John McManus, a 1999 alumnus, has received a publishing contract from Picador for his work of fiction which he wrote during his senior year at the college. His collection of short stories, entitled Stop Breakin' Down, is scheduled to be released in fall 2000. The title story will appear in the winter 2000 issue of Ploughshares, a literary magazine. While at Goucher, McManus majored in English literature and spent his junior year at the University of Exeter in England as part of Goucher's study abroad program. He has been accepted to Hollins University's master's of arts in fiction program on a full scholarship. McManus is currently resource manual editor at the Center for Poverty Solutions, a nonprofit organization in Baltimore, Maryland. He is also working on a novel which he hopes to complete by next spring.

Christine Stewart was recipient of the 1998 Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowship award, one of the largest national awards for student poetry in the country. The award is presented annually by Poetry magazine and the Modern Poetry Association. Poetry magazine editor Joseph Parisi described Stewart's work as "very fresh" and cited "Cypresses, Bathing" as one of the poems he admired. "It wasn't the usual college or graduate workshop stuff," said Parisi about her work. Stewart was selected for the award based on a collection of 10 poems she wrote and submitted to the national competition during her junior year at Goucher. She was one of only two students and the only undergraduate in the country to be honored with the award. A 1999 graduate, Stewart majored in English and creative writing. Stewart is also the author of a novel, Killing the Good Girl.

Jenn Crowell, as an eighteen-year-old sophomore , gained national attention when her first novel, Necessary Madness, a love story set in London, was published by Putnam. Prior to writing the book, she had never set foot in Britain. In fact, she gained her knowledge through travel books and British television programs. By her senior year, Crowell's second book was under contract to Putnam. Letting the Body Lead is set in Iceland (a country which Crowell has visited several times), and was delivered to the publisher in the fall of this year. A 1999 Goucher graduate, Crowell majored in English and women's studies. She will continue her studies at Towson University in Maryland through a dual graduate program in women's studies and film production.
