Each year, during the fall and spring semesters, the Kratz Center for Creative Writing welcomes several writers-in-residence or visiting authors to Goucher College. Over the course of one or two days, the fall visiting author reads from his or her work, signs books, visits classes, and chats with students. Spring writers-in-residence teach a semester-long writing workshop and tutorials as well as reading from their work. In all, the Kratz Center's visiting writers share the example of their artistry to the Goucher community and beyond.

Writers-In-Residence & Visiting Authors

Beverly Lowry, celebrated novelist and essayist, read from her work on Tuesday March 1, 2011 at 8 PM at the Buchner Room at Goucher's Alumnae/i House.

Ann Patchett, bestselling novelist, read from her work on Wednesday September 29, 2010 at 8 PM in the Kraushaar Auditorium.

Kathy Flann & Bill U'Ren, beloved fiction professors at Goucher, were our spring 2010 visiting author. She read from her work on Wednesday April 21, 2010 at 8 PM in the Batza Room at the Athenaeum.

Carolyn Chute (pronounced CHOOT) was our fall 2009 visiting author. She read from her work on Thursday October 22, 2009 at 8 PM in the Hyman Forum at the new Athenaeum.

Jessica Anya Blau was our spring 2009 writer-in-residence. She will teach a fiction writing workshop, conduct tutorials, and read from her work on Thursday April 23, 2009, at 8:00 PM in the Chapel.

Louise Erdrich was our fall 2008 visiting author. She read from her work at 8 PM on Tuesday October 28, 2008 in the Kraushaar Auditorium and met with students from 3:30-5 PM in the Soper Room of the Julia Rogers Library.

Robert Girardi was our spring 2008 writer-in-residence. He taught a fiction writing workshop, conducted tutorials, and read from his work on Thursday May 1, 2009 at 8:00 PM in the Chapel.

Edward P. Jones was our fall 2007 visiting author. He will read from his work at 8 PM on Monday October 15, 2007 in the Kraushaar Auditorium. Goucher's Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Kratz Center also co-sponsor an informal community chat with Mr. Jones from 3:30-5 PM in the Soper Room of the Julia Rogers Library.

Laura Lippman was our spring 2007 writer-in-residence. She taught a fiction writing workshop, conducted tutorials, and read from her work on Wednesday April 18, 2007 at 7:30 PM in the Chapel.

Marjane Satrapi was our visiting author for the fall of 2007. She read from her work on Wednesday November 1, 2006 at 8 PM in Kraushaar Auditorium.
